The libraries will be closed on Anzac Day - Saturday 25 April and Monday 27 April, re-opening as normal on Tuesday 28 April. 

During this time, you can still access our digital resources which include eBooks, eAudiobooks, and ePress through our digital platforms BorrowBox or ePlatform. You can also check out some movies and TV shows through Beamafilm, free with your library membership.

Paeroa Library was buzzing with laughter and literary magic last month as we welcomed the wonderful Dawn McMillan for a truly memorable visit. It was a delight to see so many tamariki enjoy the stories Dawn shared. We are so grateful to Dawn for visiting and to everyone who came along to make the morning so special. 

Waihī Library was also spoilt with an ‘egg’citing book event just in time for Easter! The wonderful creators behind ‘Magic Jack’ shared their whimsical story and the children were lucky enough to receive their own little goody bag. A huge thanks to Tania and Kirsty for visiting and to everyone who came along.

The wait is over! The shortlist for the 2026 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards has been officially announced, and it’s a stellar lineup of Aotearoa’s finest talent. From the brilliant Catherine Chidgey - ‘The Book of Guilt’, to the widely discussed memoir by Dame Jacinda Ardern - ‘A Different Kind of Power’, there is something for every reader to dive into. We are particularly proud to note a local connection this year, with academic and writer Georgina Stewart (Pare Hauraki) serving as a judge for the General Non-Fiction category! Whether you’re a fan of evocative poetry, stunning illustrated works, or gripping novels, now is the perfect time to explore these world-class stories. 

We currently have a selection of these books available in our libraries to borrow. The 2026 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards winners will be announced on 13 May at the Auckland Writers’ Festival.

Our Autumn School Holiday Programme has kicked off and runs from Tuesday 7 April to Friday 17 April at Paeroa and Waihī Libraries. We have a range of activities lined up at both libraries - 3D Printing, LEGO, Playstation and craft sessions. Make sure you collect a timetable next time you visit our libraries for dates and session times. The school holiday programme is suitable for children aged 5 -12 years old and children must be supervised. 

3D Printing sessions and Playstation sessions do require bookings. Please phone us on 07 862 8609 or email hdc-library@hauraki-dc.govt.nz to secure your spot! 

We also have craft sessions lined up, including creating your own bookmark and door hanger, cardboard roll creations and collage!

Our Senior Film Sessions continue to be a huge hit at our libraries but we are keen to hear your feedback. Do you enjoy the movie choices? Is there anything that would make the sessions more enjoyable?! Drop us a line and let us know! 

Our April film is ‘Noble’ - based on a true story. Christina Noble overcomes the harsh difficulties of her childhood in Ireland to discover her destiny on the streets of Saigon. 

Our next film session is Friday 24 April.

The Daughter by T.M. Logan - BorrowBox eAudiobook

Excellent! Keeps you on the edge of your seat right until the end. 

Lauren's daughter Evie goes missing while at university, seemingly without a trace. Lauren does everything in her power to find her, meeting some dubious characters along the way. Twitch by Mitch Albom - physical book

I really enjoyed reading ‘Twice’ by Mitch Albom, which was the first book of his that I've read. It was a quick and easy read that had me hooked the whole way through, and I found it hard to put down. 

The story follows Alfie, a man who discovers he can relive each moment of his life - twice - and alter the outcome. However, he must accept the consequences of his second chance. Twice explores themes of regret, second chances, and what truly matters in life, leaving me thoughtful long after I finished the final page. ~ Julia

Polybius by Colin Armstrong - physical book

‘Polybius’ is set in the 1980s, a time of huge technical advancement. But is it possible to push that technical advancement too far? ‘Polybius’ is chillingly close to reality while in the style of classic old school thrillers. If you’re a fan of Stephen King or Stranger Things, you’ll love this book! ~ Sam 

A real favourite among staff! Stranger Things meets The Walking Dead in this unsettling novel based on an urban legend. A small seaside town descends into chaos when an unusual video game is unveiled at the local arcade. ~ Tash
