A Word from the Libraries' Team Leader ...

“If you were a book I’d check you out” – a great pickup line to see if you are on the same page as someone else this Valentine's Day!

Valentine’s jokes aside, this has been a busy start to the year. We have had our first Book Chats and Story Time sessions. Our January month-end movie has also been and gone. All of these were well attended and we have enjoyed seeing so many of you at the libraries again. Our books are turning over in high volumes too – an interesting statistic for the last quarter (1 October to 31 December 2024) was that 28,637 physical items were processed overall. 20,681 people visited our libraries! I am looking forward to seeing the new year figures. Read on to see what interesting programmes and events are on offer in the next while. Remember the challenge is to get a friend to join our libraries!

Let's Get Crafty Summer Programme

Your tamariki did indeed get crafty over the Summer Break! How cute is this little creation made from a cardboard tube? This programme was so popular we have decided to continue it as a regular programme throughout the year. 

Our Let’s Get Crafty sessions will be on at Paeroa and Waihī Libraries every Wednesday afternoon from 2pm. 

Come and join us for some after-school fun! Supplies provided! Just bring your creativity and imagination!

Valentine's Love-Hate Display

Do you love or hate the same books as us?

Make sure you check out our “Love - Hate Relationship” displays at Paeroa and Waihī Libraries! Our staff have had such a fun time discussing which books they enjoyed or disliked. 

‘The Goldfinch’ by Donna Tartt was loved by Marion but hated by Sharlene.

‘Exquisite Corpse’ by Marija Peričić was loved by Steph and Sam but hated by Marion. 

‘The Last Chance Library’ by Freya Sampson was loved by both Rebecca and Marion. 

‘Auē’ by Becky Manawatu was loved by Marion but hated by Naomi. 

‘The Offing’ was loved by Karen but hated by Marion. 

‘The Last Thing To Burn’ by Will Dean was loved by Shey; Tash also loved his other novel ‘First Born’. 

‘Fourth Wing’ by Rebecca Yarros was loved by Rochelle, Jane, Steph and Tash ... we are yet to hear of anyone who doesn’t love this book!

Book Launch by Local Author - Robyn Tucker

Mark your calendars for a wonderful book launch happening on Saturday 1 March from 10.30am.

Robyn Tucker is a local ECE teacher turned author/illustrator! We are delighted to be holding a book launch for her first picture book ‘Who Saved the Hens?’ 

Bring your children along to meet Robyn and listen to this wonderful story book read aloud.

What's on at the Library?

Did you know that we have a great range of regular programmes happening in our libraries? 

STORYTIME: A session for your preschool-aged tamariki. Come and enjoy some picture books read aloud by our wonderful staff. Paeroa Library - every Tuesday from 10.30am. Waihī Library - every Wednesday from 10.30am.

WAIHĪ WRITERS GROUP: A group for all types of writers to share ideas and spur imagination. Waihī Library - every second Tuesday from 11am.

PAEROA CHESS CLUB: Want to learn how to play? Or experienced and looking for a partner to battle? Then Chess Club is for you! Paeroa Library - every Friday from 2pm.

GENEALOGY: Interested in learning more about your Family History? Attend one of our free sessions with a volunteer from the NZ Society of Genealogists. Paeroa Library - last Saturday of every month from 10am. Workshops are held at Waihī Library on the second Wednesday of each month from 10.30am. Bookings essential - phone Vicki 027 372 9189.

BOOK CHATS: Join your community of readers at our libraries. Enjoy a cuppa while having a chat about the books you’ve been reading. We invite Ngātea members to join us for our Paeroa sessions. Paeroa Library - first Monday of every month from 10.30am. Waihī Library - first Thursday of every month from 10.30am.

LET’S GET CRAFTY: Get creative with our crafting supplies! Paeroa & Waihī Libraries - every Wednesday from 2pm.

LEGO: Lego at the Library: Let’s get building! Paeroa & Waihī Libraries - every Saturday 9.30am - 12 noon.

DIGITAL DROP-IN: Digital assistance with computers & phones. Paeroa & Waihī Libraries - every Friday 10am - 12 noon.

Book Review

High Wire by Candice Fox

The “Wire” is an outback Australian track, unmarked but used by those criminals that know of its existence. Harvey Buck is travelling the Wire and comes across a fellow traveller whose car has broken down. He offers her a lift, and before long the pair are ambushed and strapped into bomb vests, and ordered to commit hideous crimes or else be blown up. The story also follows the police officer trying to solve a crime spree that doesn’t stay in one place. It’s fast paced and has great characters… Review by Jane - Library Assistant

Senior Film Sessions

Our Senior Film Sessions continue to be a huge hit at our libraries. Our February film is ‘Then Came You’. A lonely widow plans a trip around the world with her husband’s ashes to visit the places they loved in the movies. The first stop on the journey changes her life forever. 11am - 1pm at Paeroa 1pm - 3pm at Waihī.  Our next film session is Friday 28 February.
