“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” — Frederick Douglass.
As we come to the end of our financial year, we get the opportunity to review our budgets and what we offer our ratepayers in general, and our readers specifically. It is a great opportunity for planning and implementing new ideas. You can look forward to more offerings on BorrowBox to enhance your eBook and eAudio experience, including magazines and newspapers being available on the App. A brand new library website is also coming soon, to match Council’s main site! Our ‘real’ books will also continue to be relevant and cater to readers from all walks of life. Look out for interesting programmes that you will be able to participate in – from kids to seniors – there is something for everyone in the libraries! Keep safe and warm as we hit Winter in our beautiful country – why not rug up and read?

Knit-A-Square for Age Concern
Picture below: Knitting in our Reading Room at Paeroa Library!
We recently took part in an initiative run by Age Concern Hauraki Coromandel where we asked for donations of knitted squares which were going to be turned into blankets. We decided to hold a knitting morning where the community could come together to share skills and knit for the cause. The morning was a great success and we were overrun with donations! These squares have now been picked up and the blankets which have been made will be on display on Friday 21st June from 11am at Age Concern’s office in Thames.
Waihī Library Notice
We have some exciting changes coming to Waihī Library! Our cushions are in the process of being re-upholstered. In the meantime, we ask that you please do not sit on the benches. We are sorry for this inconvenience, but you will soon be able to enjoy our new cushions. Please note, we do still have seating at our tables throughout the library.

3D Printing Sessions
We had such a blast at our Autumn school holiday programme creating some wonderful pieces using our 3D Printers. Our Library Cadet, Sam, planned and ran with the innovative technology, along with help from other staff.
Children were able to design and create their own 3D pieces and the Library staff members were so impressed by the ideas and final creations!
We plan to hold more 3D Printing sessions in our upcoming Winter school holiday programme. Please note that a degree of computer literacy is needed to be able to design and print. Spaces were booked out fast last time, so keep your eyes peeled for when we open bookings closer to the start of July.
Beanstack Book Reviews
Submitting a book review in Beanstack is a great way to tell your community about your favourite reads! Here is a selection of reviews featured on the Hauraki District Libraries Beanstack app to inspire your reading.
Heartbreaking reality of refugees and how their lives become dependent on the decisions and motives of individuals, organisations, governments and military. The enduring love, hope and connection of family and culture were threaded through the story.
This was a look at grief through the eyes of the different family members after their mother died. It’s about getting lost and losing their way and how they find their way back to normality.
