New waste plan to be developed
Council will develop a new Waste Minimisation and Management Plan that includes updated information about waste services throughout the district.
It will also consider the latest predictions of waste demand, as outlined in the recently published Waste Strategy document,"Te rautaki para."
Te rautaki para outline the goals for reducing waste that Otago councils must follow when creating their Waste Minimisation and Management Plans.
Additionally, in March 2023 requirements for improving and standardising household recycling at the kerbside were introduced by Central Government.
The new plan aims to allow for the consideration of shared and possible partnership projects, potentially leading to cost savings, better access to government funding, and more efficient use of resources for project management and delivery.
Council’s existing waste plan was scheduled for review in 2024 and will not meet the new kerbside recycling standards that will be implemented during the current plan's timeframe.
Once council develops a draft plan, the community will be asked for feedback.
