Request for funding to support surf lifesaving
Kaka Point Surf Life Saving Club has asked Clutha District Council for additional funding to provide paid lifeguards to patrol the Kaka Point beach during the 2023-24 summer.
The southern region of Surf Lifesaving New Zealand put forward a submission for funding of $45,000 through the Annual Plan 2023-24 for a patrol, however Council decided to grant the club its usual annual $25,000 instead.
Club president Mark van Asperen told councillors that due to a two-year hiatus during COVID the club did not have enough local lifesavers to patrol the beach.
He said the club’s only option was to pay for lifeguards to come from Dunedin to patrol and more funding was needed to cover this cost.
He said the club had plans to grow numbers and take back patrolling in the future.
Council asked staff to investigate further options and bring a full report back to Council.
